Nothing like a bright clean lemon tart to add some sunshine to an otherwise horrendously thunderstorming weekend. Never thought I’d have the time to make it down to this design outpost hidden on the second floor of a grungy building in Gion – the first houses Fukuoka’s Comme Des Garcons outlet. Initially wanted to get only a warm cuppa but hearing that lemon was the tart of the day…I simply couldn’t resist. Served with a light quenelle of vanilla ice cream and crushed nuts.

Apart from the cafe, the place stocks some gorgeous functional goods designed at home and abroad. I particularly love the aesthetics of Japanese cutlery – the way they make solid materials look absolutely fluid. It’s not a big place, but it’s comfortable, and there’s so much to see and admire.

What would I do with all these if I bought them? Not entirely sure, but that isn’t stopping me from wanting to pack one of each home. Beautiful household goods are somehow always persuasively useful.
